FAQ

Displaid in details

01-What is bridge monitoring, and why is it essential for the safety of existing infrastructure?

Bridge monitoring refers to the set of technologies and methodologies used to observe the structural behaviour of an asset over time through continuous data acquisition and analysis. Unlike one-off inspections, monitoring enables the detection of anomalies, degradation processes, and early signs of structural issues.

For both public and private asset owners, structural monitoring is a key tool for improving infrastructure safety, supporting data-driven technical decisions, and planning maintenance activities more effectively.

02-What is the difference between visual inspections and continuous structural health monitoring (SHM), and how do they complement each other?

Visual inspections allow surface defects and visible degradation to be identified through periodic assessments carried out by qualified technical personnel. Continuous Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), on the other hand, automatically measures the real structural behaviour over time, providing quantitative data on deformations, vibrations, and changes in structural response.

These two approaches are complementary rather than alternative. SHM supports and guides inspection activities by helping prioritise interventions, while inspections provide the contextual information needed to correctly interpret monitoring data

03-When is it advisable to install a structural monitoring system on a bridge?

Structural monitoring is particularly recommended for aging infrastructure, bridges that are strategic for the network, assets subjected to high traffic loads or harsh environmental conditions, or when uncertainty exists regarding structural health.

Monitoring is also highly effective after strengthening or rehabilitation works, to verify the effectiveness of the adopted solutions, and as a support tool for routine network management, reducing reliance on emergency interventions.

04-How does Displaid support advanced, data-driven infrastructure management?

Displaid supports the management of existing infrastructure through a solution that combines advanced sensing technology, data analysis algorithms, and a centralised management platform. The goal is to transform monitoring data into operational insights that support risk assessment, inspection planning, and maintenance optimisation.

This approach enables asset owners to shift from reactive management to a truly data-driven strategy, based on objective and continuously updated evidence, in line with best practices in infrastructure asset management.

05-What does Displaid offer?

Displaid provides a complete infrastructure monitoring service, covering the entire structural monitoring value chain. This includes monitoring system design, supply and installation of proprietary sensors, advanced data analysis, and information delivery through the Iris digital platform.

The offering is modular and customizable: clients can adopt a full end-to-end solution or integrate individual services into existing monitoring systems, while maintaining full operational flexibility.

06-What types of infrastructure can Displaid monitor?

Displaid technology was specifically developed for the structural monitoring of bridges and viaducts, which represent the core application of the solution. Experience gained on these assets, characterised by high structural and operational complexity, has driven the development of highly reliable sensors, algorithms, and analysis tools.

The same approach can be extended to other infrastructure assets with similar characteristics, such as dams, historic buildings, power grid facilities, and wind farms. In all cases, the solution is tailored to the specific asset and operational context.
